The combined death toll from two major earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria on Monday rose to more than 2,300.

A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Turkey and northern Syria early Monday, killing more than 1,300 people. About 12 hours later, a second earthquake of magnitude 7.6 struck southern Turkey.

According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority, around 3,471 buildings collapsed during the devastating event.
