The Pro Bowl has always been a little different in the NFL.
Initially conceived as the league’s version of the All-Star Game, it used to be held after the Super Bowl after fans had begun to move on from the season. So, the officials moved it to a week before the Super Bowl, but that meant members of the two best teams were absent—and the other players would usually play with milder temperaments.
This year, the NFL is once again trying something new—a two-day series of events that culminates in a trio of AFC vs. NFC flag football games. This is an interesting concept. The question is, will fans care?
The first event took place on Thursday, with players participating in dodgeball, water balloon catching events and the NFL Take on the Dunking Booth. (Really.) There were also longest pass contests and the first round of “Best Catch” games, where the player attempts to get the ball in the most creative way possible.
Sunday will see the final round of flag football events, along with that “Best Catch” contest and other… unusual games.
Does this sound more like field day at school than the NFL All-Star Game? Of course it does. Does that mean it won’t be fun? Well, only time will answer this question. We’ll remind you that “Battle of the Network Stars” lasted just under 10 years, so, at least at one point in time, there was an audience for this sort of thing. If you’re looking for the best way to watch TV or you won’t be near a TV, here are the best ways to catch sports.
When is the 2022 Pro Bowl and where can I watch it?
Today’s games are not what you are used to. After the finals of the “Best Catch” contest, players will participate in:
- The Gridiron Gauntlet, a Display of Strength That Feels Like “Wipeout”
- kick tac toe, where each team’s kicker, punter and long snapper will compete to complete a connecting line of three squares or hit a total of five squares;
- Move the Chains, which sees players sprinting up a weighted wall 10 yards as fast as they can using the first chains
- It all ends with three flag football games.
Sunday, February 5
AFC vs. NFC at 3:00 PM ET on ABC, ESPN and Disney XD
What’s different about the 2022 Pro Bowl compared to previous years?
There’s never been a real reason for players to train hard at the Pro Bowl, because risking injury didn’t make sense. Fans were tired of seeing them go easy on each other, so this year the league did away with the tackle game altogether, opting instead for a series of skill challenges capped by a few rounds of flag football. The AFC and NFL would have three seven-by-seven games of flag football on a smaller field with two 10-minute halftimes. It may not be the All-Star Game fans were expecting, but it’s still a celebration of the game.
